For 132 years, All Souls College has held something of an intellectual marathon, open only to one or two hand-picked grad students: two twelve-hour days of intense essay writing, the most famous challenge of which is the fabled one-word-question essay. This test of intellectual agility began with a single sheet of paper with one noun printed neatly in the center, and ended three hours later when the allotted time had run out.
Widely considered to be the most difficult exam in the world, it has stumped the likes of Joseph Stiglitz and T E Lawrence one

After much planning and effort on the part of the PoetryPlease staff, PoetryPlease is ready to announce plans to run its first ever Chat Week starting Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 12pm EST. We've got a lot of great activities lined up, all of which will take place in the PoetryPlease Chat Room.

Winter 01 The leaves have surrendered to a chill-wintry wind,Winter 01 by ~sweetcapris
sending shudders up the backs of bare trees.
Their crisp silhouettes rattle against a grey-fog sky,
and I hold my breath for a moment
half expecting the boughs to shatter.
My feet are snug between three layers of socks,
stuffed and packed into my cotton-lined boots.
With confidence I try the ice puddle that
hugs the tree's upturned roots.
One step,
One step's all it takes to break the shell
and expose the slushy ice bath beneath.
Into hands cupped over my mouth, I sigh...
No ice skating today.
